The Daiquiri is a classic cocktail consisting of rum, sugar, and lime juice, but there are infinite ways to riff on it, which is what I've done here. I used a truly unusual liqueur in this daiquiri. It's called Taktser, and it's made by a brand called Bitter Journey. The founder of the brand wanted to pay homage to the Dalai Lama (whose life is a "bitter journey") by using 17 Tibetan botanicals from his home region of Taktser. This liqueur is unlike anything I've ever tasted. Words that I and others have used include saline, marine, eucalyptus, antiseptic, herbal, and unique. As a lover of Scotch whisky, especially peated Islay single malts, I maintain that people who like Scotch will probably like Taktser. It's not at all smoky like peated whisky, but it shares other qualities.
TIBETAN DAIQUIRI
2 oz. Rolling Fork rum (or other gold rum)
3/4 oz. fresh squeezed lime juice
3/4 oz. Taktser liqueur
1/2 oz. Boozy Botanicals Vanilla-Spice syrup
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Fill 3/4 full with ice and stir for 30 seconds. Double-strain into a coupe. Garnish with a dehydrated lime wheel.
Taktser isn't available in stores outside of Northern California, but you can buy it online through Shotsbox.com. If you like interesting liqueurs or Scotch whisky, I definitely recommend giving it a try!
