The gin & tonic is one of the easiest cocktails imaginable. It can be as simple as literally gin and tonic in a glass. Often you'll see recipes add a bit of lime juice. But you can also make it more interesting and complicated.
One of the companies I work with is Malfy Gin, based in Italy. They currently make four types of gin: traditional, Con Limone (with lemon), Arancia (blood orange), and Rosa (grapefruit). They asked their partners to re-imagine the gin & tonic, and this was my take.
GRAPEFRUIT & SAGE GIN & TONIC
2 oz. Malfy Gin Rosa
1/2 oz. freshly squeezed pomelo juice
OR Twisted Alchemy cold-pressed grapefruit juice
1/4 oz. sage simple syrup
4 oz. Fever-Tree Aromatic tonic water
Combine the gin, juice, and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake for 12 seconds. Strain into a goblet filled with fresh ice. Top with Aromatic tonic water (which is pink). Garnish with 1/2 a pomelo wheel and some sage leaves.
To make sage simple syrup, combine 1 cup granulated sugar with 1 cup water in a small saucepan. Heat over medium and stir until sugar dissolves. Toss in a handful of fresh sage leaves, stir, and remove from heat. Allow the sage to steep for about 30 minutes while the syrup cools. Strain out the sage leaves and store the syrup in a glass bottle in the refrigerator. Use within a few weeks.
