If you like Negronis and other bitter amari, I bet you will like this drink. I combined Cynar (an amaro based on artichokes) and silver tequila. Throw in some lime juice and a pineapple juice stand-in, and you have something that's tropical but not sweet. It's more like something to sip on the patio of your vacation villa than poolside, but it will definitely put you in the mood for travel.
INTERNATIONAL TRAVELER
1 1/2 oz. silver tequila (I used Blue Nectar)
3/4 oz. Citra Fresh Agave Piña Colada mixer
3/4 oz. Cynar 70
3/4 oz. fresh lime juice
1/2 oz. simple syrup
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake 15 seconds, Strain into a rocks glass over a large ice cube. Garnish with dehydrated pineapple and lime wheels.
The dehydrated garnishes here are from The Cocktail Garnish in Los Angeles. Citra Fresh Agave is also based in Southern California. Their Piña Colada mixer has pineapple juice and coconut cream pre-mixed. If you don't have that or can't get it, you can use fresh pineapple juice, but the taste of the drink will be a little different. I also used cold-pressed lime juice from Twisted Alchemy in this recipe. It's an excellent stand-in for fresh juices, and is indistinguishable from fresh.
